Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Reverse Osmosis / Deionization (RO/DI) systems are the most popular filtration systems for purifying water at home. An RO system is great for freshwater aquariums, planted aquariums, drinking water and horticulture.

Do I have Chloramines? What are Chloramines? How does Chloramines affect me and my aquarium? What does Chloramine do to my RO/DI System? Why does my DI cartridge get used up so quickly? What is the best way to remove/address Chloramines?

At the heart of every RO and RO/DI system is the RO Membrane. The Reverse Osmosis Membrane is also called a TFC (Thin Film Composite) Membrane. 

The RO Membrane works by using water pressure to separate impurities from purified water. The RO Membrane is very effective at purifying water. It can remove up to 99% percent of over 100 contaminates.

The Sediment Filter is the first stage of your RO or RO/DI system.   The Poly Blown Sediment Filter is extremely efficient at removing particulates such as dirt, rust, sand, scale and salt. It is a very important stage of the RO or RO/DI System.

The Carbon Block Filter is the second stage of your RO or RO/DI System. The job of the carbon block filter is to remove many of the chemicals and organic pollutants that your RO membrane cannot remove.

If you have a saltwater fish-only or reef aquarium, you have likely been told how important it is to have ZERO TDS, pure water. Replicating ocean water parameters is a delicate task, so it is important to start with as pure of a water source as possible to minimize the chances of things going wrong. Having zero TDS water also helps to combat algae problems and nutrient issues. The DI (Deionization) fitler of your RO/DI system is what will get you that ultra-pure, ZERO TDS, water!

Recently I ran into issues due to my lack of knowledge about our RO system in our shop. I knew that the previous owner used Aqua FX and we have ordered from y’all in the past. I called in today and spoke with Doug and explained my issues. Doug took the time to patiently explain the system and how it works and then walked me thru fixing my issues. I had to call in twice because of my lack of knowledge and both times Doug took the time to get me thru the issues. In the end my system is now working properly and only because of Doug’s assistance. Being a new owner of Riley’s Reef I am not even sure of Doug’s position at Aqua FX however I am extremely grateful of the service he provided. I'd like to share an amazing result using Reverse Osmosis Water for your chickens. After being contacted by Organic Chicken Farmers about Reverse Osmosis equipment to make water for their chickens, I decided I needed to see what the deal was.

Many times when light is present and there is no Chlorine or Chloramine in the water, Algae will grow. The best method to eliminate this is to remove all the old filters. Then run a weak bleach solution through your system, leaving it in there for 20 minutes or more is recommended. After the time has passed, rinse THOROUGHLY and wipe down this unit as best you can. Install new filters, and you should be fine. Keeping your system out of direct light should eliminate the chance of another algae bloom.
