The
AquaFX Vertical Mount Float Switch
(Part Number:
FLT-E
) is a compact, highly adaptable liquid level sensor designed for automated liquid monitoring in aquarium RO/DI systems, reservoirs, and mixing sumps. Unlike horizontal models, this electrical sensor monitors water lines from a top-down or bracketed orientation using a classic vertical "donut" arrangement.
Key Specifications & Features
Reversible Wiring Logic (NO / NC):
The hallmark feature of the
FLT-E
is its ultimate electrical versatility
. By simply removing a small retaining clip at the base of the stem and flipping the buoyant magnetic donut ring upside down, you can instantly convert the sensor from
Normally-Closed (NC)
to
Normally-Open (NO)
to seamlessly match your controller's logic loop.
Magnetic Reed Operation:
The central shaft houses a completely sealed reed switch. As the water level shifts vertically along the track, the internal magnet within the donut float triggers the switch cleanly without any exposed mechanical components or levers.
Low-Voltage Signal Trigger:
The
FLT-E
operates as a two-wire contact loop designed to communicate safely with aquarium controllers or relays
.
Note:
It should never be used to directly power high-amperage 110V pumps or booster lines; it must always be connected to an external relay box or automated controller to prevent premature internal switch burnout.

Primary Applications
Auto Top-Off (ATO) & Sump Integration:
It serves as a reliable core trigger for automated top-off systems, maintaining tight water columns in your sump to stabilize aquarium salinity.
High/Low Custom Brackets:
It is the direct replacement component used in
AquaFX's premium sliding-track brackets
, allowing hobbyists to construct high-water fail-safes or dual-float configurations to combat TDS creep.

Saltwater Maintenance Warning: Preventing Salt Creep Failures
While the materials are corrosion-resistant, saltwater evaporation creates a physical hazard known as
salt creep
(crusty salt deposits). Because this sensor relies on a vertical sliding track, salt creep requires active management to prevent system failures.
What Will Happen If It Is Not Monitored:
The Donut Float Will Jam:
Over time, salt crystals and calcium crust will accumulate directly on the central vertical stem. This buildup creates friction and will eventually jam the moving donut ring, freezing it in place.
Risk 1: Stuck in the "Down" Position (Overfill/Flood):
If the float gets stuck at the bottom of the stem, your automation system will assume the water level is constantly low. It will continuously pump fresh water into the aquarium, causing an expensive room flood and a catastrophic drop in tank salinity.
Risk 2: Stuck in the "Up" Position (Underfill/Dry Pump):
If the float jams at the top of the stem, the system will assume the tank is always full. It will fail to trigger your auto top-off, causing your water levels to drop, your return pump to run dry, and your tank salinity to spike.
How to Prevent Failures:
Routine Freshwater Rinses:
Gently slide the donut float up and down during weekly maintenance. Rinse the entire assembly with fresh RO/DI water to dissolve any hidden salt crust or mineral buildup.
Keep Wires Clear:
Ensure the wire lead coming out of the top of the stem stays clear of splashing water, as salt creep can travel up the cords.
